Writing article for Hatchery Place closure party

From 2016’s scrappy suburban experiment to a low-key legend of Malaysia’s coliving scene, The Hatchery Place (Subang Jaya) just threw its last house party—complete with karaoke, free plants, and a final group hug under that famous chalkboard wall.

What went down

  • “We’re transitioning… and it’s not easy.” That’s how founders Elaine & Kevin broke the news on Instagram. They’re handing back the keys to their three-bedroom nest, so no more desks, no more midnight Milo runs, no more black-wall doodles.

  • Goodbye party highlights: impromptu sing-offs, tear-stained selfies, and residents carting away pothos cuttings like souvenirs. Hashtag #THPgoodbyeparty says it all.

  • One last open-house: They invited folks to erase the chalk art together—a literal wipe-the-slate-clean moment before locking the door.

Why this stings (again)

Sun & Co. last week, The Hatchery today—Asia’s and Europe’s OG spots dropping like flies. Proof the passion economy alone can’t pay the lease, even when a space oozes heart.

Our take

Losing the permanent house hurts, but the ethos—slow, intentional, community-first—survives. Community isn’t four walls; it’s the people willing to drag a whiteboard anywhere and call it home.

Raise your mug of teh tarik to the little house that taught us to breathe between deadlines. 🌿✨
